“It's actually our first new topical anesthetic in over a decade, and it has some advantages,” he said. “It has a rapid onset of action and a longer duration of action than the typical tetracaine or proparacaine that we use today.”
Iheezo (chloroprocaine hydrochloride ophthalmic gel, Harrow) was FDA approved for ocular surface anesthesia in September 2022.

If the residual refractive error is large and the cornea is normal, “In that case, something happened. You have to go in and change that lens and treat that quickly,” Farid said.
There are many tools available to the surgeon to address residual refractive error, according to Farid. The key, she said, is to systematically determine the source of the error and go from there.
