Pfizer says third dose of vaccine boosts protection, including against delta variant

Pfizer disclosed data Wednesday showing that a booster dose of its COVID-19 vaccine provides added protection beyond the currently recommended two doses, including against the delta variant.
The data, which have not been peer-reviewed, were included in a second-quarter earnings report.
Also Wednesday, researchers reported “a gradually declining trend” in the vaccine's efficacy, from more than 96% in the first 2 months to under 84% at 6 months, according to a preprint study funded by Pfizer and BioNTech that also has not been peer-reviewed.

One of the challenges health care providers face in administering COVID-19 vaccines is vaccine hesitancy, especially among disadvantaged populations.
The HHS reports that a lower proportion of the Black and Hispanic populations have received a COVID-19 vaccination compared with the “non-Hispanic white population.” This is a troubling trend, particularly considering that end-stage kidney disease disproportionately affects communities of color. Of those on dialysis, 34% are Black patients and 19% are Hispanic patients.

Biden to require vaccination or regular testing for federal workers

President Joe Biden on Thursday announced a plan to require federal workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or face regular testing and other measures.
Under the mandate, all federal workers on federal property who do not attest to being vaccinated or are not vaccinated will have to wear a mask, undergo testing several times a week, practice social distancing and be subject to travel restrictions. The requirement applies to federal contractors as well.
“If you want to do business with the federal government, get your workers vaccinated,” Biden said.
