In the LAAOS III trial, concomitant left atrial appendage occlusion during cardiac surgery for another indication reduced the risk for ischemic stroke and systemic embolism in patients with atrial fibrillation.
“Surgical left atrial appendage occlusion reduced ischemic stroke by 33%. After the first high-risk perioperative period of 30 days, the effect was more pronounced, with a reduction of 42%,” Richard Whitlock, MD, PhD, cardiac surgeon at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, said during a late-breaking clinical trial presentation at the American College of Cardiology
